This morning was the second race in the Rogue Trail Series, and it was at Emma Long Motorcycle park. Running on a motorcycle trail was very interesting, but there were quite a few nicely bermed turns, and a whole lot of rock. If I had to sum up the trail out there it would be lots of rock stairs broken up by short spurts of twisty but flat trail.
The race course was an abrubt turn onto single track (narrow trail, single file style) almost immediately. After the initial shuffle I ended up in 5th place when we went single file, and almost immediately one of the guys right behind me goes down after tripping on one of the many roots or rocks in that section. Right about that time I looked at the front of the pack to see what Warren was doing, and that ended up being the last glimpse of Warren (who one the last race as well as this one) I would get for the rest of the race…he took off to say the least. While part of me really wishes I was in the position to try and go with him, I wasn’t, and the rest of the race just sort of just happened. Within seconds of Warren being out of sight I decided that I wasn’t going to hang out behind the couple guys in front of me so I made a pass or two, which left one more person in front of me. Here is where the race just sort of fell into my grasp, I hear what sounds like plastic bouncing off the ground, and the guy in front of me takes a quick glance towards the ground. I had the thought go through my head that maybe his timing chip (which straps onto the ankle) had fallen off, and right when I decided that couldn’t have happened cause he was still running, a guy behind both of us hollered “did someone loose a timing chip?” which led to the guy in front of me slowing down while saying “YEAH, thanks!” and stopping to retrieve it. After that it was basically a solo trail run for me, I kept thinking I was hearing footsteps behind me but never saw anyone.
Finished 2nd overall!

Ran 5.89 miles in 46:47. Splits:
7:34 – 7:42 – 7:45 – 8:30 – 8:20 – 6:53
Avg. HR – 167 / Max HR – 179
The garmin obviously got a little behind on the timing and mileage (probably due to the tree cover).
Right after I finished my stomach evacuated the small amount of water I had ingested pre-race. So that was nice.
Overall a really great race. I think I’m really starting to enjoy these trail races.
